What is the Change Account?

The Change Account is a transactional account with its own sort code, account number and a Prepaid Debit MasterCard®. It offers many payment features, such as Faster Payments and Direct Debits as well as innovative budgeting tools which make it easier for you to manage your money.

How does it work?

The Change Account has two main features: a debit card which can be used for cash withdrawals and purchases, and electronic ‘Wallets’.

What is a Wallet?

A Change Account Wallet is a secure budgeting tool which helps you manage your money and takes the stress out of bill payments. Wallets are like mini accounts alongside your card account and you can only access them online or through your mobile app. Your Change Account Wallets have a time lock which means you can’t transfer money onto Your Card account immediately or pay someone immediately.  This is designed to help you take time to consider whether you really want to spend money that you had previously planned to spend on something else.

How is the Change Account similar to a Bank Account?

The Change Account has many of the benefits of a bank account, such as: Direct Debits, Faster Payments and BACS Credits, A Prepaid Debit Chip and PIN Card which can be used in store, online and at ATMs worldwide*, and its own dedicated sort code and account number. You can access and manage your Change Account online and via your mobile app, using a secure login.

Who can apply?

To apply for The Change Account, you must be 18 years old or over and a resident in the UK. There are no credit checks required to apply for this account.

How much does it cost?

This account has a monthly fee of £4.25 when opened directly through The Change Account. However, National Fire Savers Credit Union members can open an account through the credit union to receive an exclusive discount; this will cost just 50p per month.

Are there any additional costs involved?

The Change Account intends to give its customers a wide ranging and unique selection of retailers to gain cash back rewards with. Customers can see the list of brands involved when they login to their Change Account online or at the end of the sign-up process. However, withdrawing cash or using your card abroad is chargeable as per below.

- UK ATM withdrawals - £0.70 (£1 directly)
- Retailers who provide cashback at POS – free
- Abroad purchase transactions – 2.75%
- Abroad ATM withdrawals – £0.70 (£1 directly) plus 2.75% FX Currency Fee

How secure is it?

The Change Account is an e-money product and is not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. However, once we have received your money it is deposited in a secure account with a prime-rated bank based in London Raphael’s Bank uses prime credit risk ratings from Moody’s Investment Service, Standard & Poors, and Fitch to assess and identify prime-rated banks.

Please be aware that National Fire Savers will receive no financial benefit from members opening an account with The Change Account. This is a product that we believe our members may find useful and have therefore negotiated a discounted rate for those joining via the credit union.
